Helminthiasis, also known as worm infection, is any macroparasitic disease of humans and other animals in which a part of the body is infected with parasitic worms, known as are numerous species of these parasites, which are broadly classified into tapeworms, flukes, and often live in the gastrointestinal tract of their hosts, but they may also burrow into other. Acute helminth infections in inappropriate hosts can also cause severe febrile and debilitating illnesses. In the murine model of Schistosoma mansoni, parasites reside in mesenteric veins where they lay hundreds of eggs per day 4 to 5 weeks postinfection. Some eggs are trapped in the microvasculature of the liver and gut, where they induce a vigorous granulomatous response.
Background. The plantation sector in Sri Lanka lags behind the rest of the country in terms of living conditions and health. In , a sector-wide survey of children aged 3–12 years and women of reproductive age showed >90% prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth infections. Albendazole was found to be highly effective (%) as compared to levamisole (%) against gastro-intestinal nematodes in parrots. Key words: Helminthiasis, Enteritis, Chemotherapy, Albendazole, Levamisole INTRODUCTION Helminthiasis in birds produces pathogenic conditions ranging from dilations of gut and nodule formation to severe enteritis.

Anthelmintics are drugs that act either locally within the gut lumen to cause expulsion of worms from the GI tract, or systemically against helminths residing outside the GI tract.
Therapy for many tissue-dwelling helminths, such as filarial parasites, is not fully effective. There is increasing appreciation of the impact of helminth infections on the health and education of school-aged children.
